Nadal and sport stars raise fund against malaria

As this year ends and new one on the way, Spaniard sportsman Rafael Nadal is showing skills other than tennis. The tennis world number one joined Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas in the 2nd annual Malaria fundraiser in Madrid. The event pitted the world's best against each other in activities such as go-karting, tennis and football.

Appointing themselves captains, Nadal and Casillas led a galaxy of stars in the battle for points. Casillas cunningly included two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso for his go-karting team, and the Spaniard of course romped to an easy victory.

Then, on the tennis court, Alonso and former tennis number 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero defeated WRC's Carlos Sainz and former French Open champion Carlos Moya, giving team Iker one more point. But Nadal's team launched a comeback to close the tennis score at 3-2, meaning the football round would be the decider.

With football players on both sides like Santi Cazorla, Iker Casillas, former West Ham striker Freddy Kanoute and Samuel Eto'o, goals were guaranteed. Tennis player Feliciano Lopez proved he was pretty handy even without a racket as he slotted home a classy goal.

Nadal also showed his all-round sporting ability with an impressive display scoring twice for his team. But the final score was 11-9 to team Iker. Regardless of the result on the scoreboard, the real winner was the fight against malaria, and all profits will go to a Red Cross health centre in the African country of Mali.
