Chinese version of Hamlet

Every year in April, people in Britain stage a grand celebration to mark the birth of William Shakespeare. This year marks the 445th birthday of the great playwright. And a group of young artists in ancient Chinese costumes have joined in to pay tribute to 'the Bard of Avon.'

The Mandarin version of Hamlet premiered last Thursday in Stratford-upon-Avon hometown of Shakespeare. Set in the late Tang Dynasty, some eleven-hundred years ago, the story tells of the journey toward revenge of prince Liu Huan, resembling the story of Shakespeare's Hamlet.

Despite the language barrier, local audiences did not find it difficult to appreciate.

Led by director Mai Qiu and actor Tian Zheng, the performers from Beijing and Hong Kong find it a privilege to share people's admiration and respect for the great playwright and poet.

Actor Tian Zheng said, "When I was a student, I saw many dramas based on Shakespeare's originals. I am happy today I could be lead actor in this Chinese version of Hamlet. This drama provides another interpretation to Shakespeare's masterpiece. "

Director Mai Qiu said, "We want to combine the spirit of Hamlet with Chinese history and culture. I found a thread to link them together. That is the contradiction of love. "

The Chinese version of Hamlet was staged three nights in a row at the Civic Hall of Stratford-upon-Avon.
