About four thousand cubic meters of water flooded the mine early on Saturday morning. Twenty-two miners were at work underground at that time. Six managed to escape. Rescuers are using six pumps to drain the water. Local officials say it will take another day to pump out all of the water.
Officials from the State Administration of Work Safety are at the site to assist in rescue operations. The four miners rescued early on Sunday morning are in a stable condition.
A miner said, "We were closely watching the water level underground. We marked it, and found it was getting lower. Finally it went seventy or eighty meters lower, and we knew someone was here saving us."
The coal mine is a legally registered and capable of producing 40 thousand tons of coal a year. But the local government says it may have resumed production without prior, required, approval. Police are holding the mine owner, along with several others, in custody. An initial investigation shows that improper operations by workers may have caused the flooding.
