Former WBA champ Page dies at 50

WASHINGTON, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Former heavyweight boxing champion Greg Page died of brain injury complications at 50 on Monday, it was reported.

His wife Patricia Page said a severe brain injury eight years ago led to complications of which Page died at his Kentucky home, according to AFP.

Page was in a coma for a week following the March 2001 World Boxing Association title fight when he was floored by 24-year-old Dale Crowe after 10 rounds and did not get up.

He suffered a stroke during post-fight surgery and was paralyzed on his left side and received intensive physical therapy.

Page won a 1.2 million dollar suit two years ago over the lack of medical help at the match.

Page knocked out South African Gerrie Coetzee in 1984 to win the world championship title. He lost the belt five months later to Tony Tubbs.
