Four are in a critical condition. Police Major Denis Yevsyukov, whose wife had recently left him, finished his late shift on Sunday and hitched a ride to the supermarket.

Moscow's chief of police says the investigation was "leaning towards the conclusion that this was mental distress." The officer has been detained.
