The Phillies began the defense of their World Championship with a matchup against the Braves. Brian McCann gave Atlanta an early 2-0 advantage.
Jeff Francoeur had just 11 home runs in a disappointing 2008 season, but made it a 3-0 game against the Phillies.
In his first at-bat of his rookie season, Jordan Schafer hit a high shot to left center field that made it over the wall to give Atlanta a four-run lead. Atlanta finally won the game 4-1 and handed Philadelphia their fourth straight opening day loss.
