Beijing celebrates lantern fest

A unique parade was held on Monday to celebrate the traditional Chinese Lantern Festival on Beijing's Qianmen Street. The street is a commercial thoroughfare that has been in use for over 600 years.

The parade featured lion dances, acrobatics, Yangge dances and other cultural activities to showcase the essence of Chinese traditions. About 12 troupes from Beijing, Shandong, Henan and a few other provinces took part in the folk performance parade.

This year, Beijing was able to gather most of the traditional activities in the capital city. Rooted deeply in China's traditional culture, many of them are recognized as the country's intangible cultural heritage.

Herds of Beijing residents piled onto Qianmen street, gaining a real feeling for the festival.

Some folk artists were invited to make demonstrations of painting, paper cut, kite making, and other handicrafts.

Lantern Festival, which falls on the fifteenth day of the first month in China's lunar calendar, marks the end of the Spring Festival. On this day, people venture outside carrying paper lanterns and try to solve the riddles on them.
