Chinas electrical capacity nears 800 mln kw

China's power capacity has reached nearly 800 million kilowatts. Twenty-percent of the electricity generated now comes from clean energy sources.

The National Energy Administration says China's power generation capacity increased 90 million kilowatts last year to 800 million kilowatts. Renewable energy now accounts for nearly one fifth of the country's total capacity. Figures also show the country launched nearly 15 million kilowatts of nuclear energy projects in 2008. That equals the total combination of nuclear power projects over the past 20 years.

Meanwhile, China shut down nearly 34 million kilowatts in small coal-fired power generators over the past 2 years.

Hao Weiping, Deputy Director of Power Dept. National Energy Administration says, last year, small coal-fired electrical generation dropped 14 percent year on year.

But the capacity of hydropower was up nearly 13 percent now. This proves the reform and readjustments in China power sector have yielded achievements, which will boost sustainable economic developments.

Last year, China worked out a series of policies to speed up the elimination of high-energy consuming, small coal-fired generators.

Figures show nearly 60 percent of China's power generation units now are high-efficiency, environmental friendly large coal-fired generators. In addition, the country's wind capacity exceeds more than 10 million kilowatts, the 5th largest worldwide.
