In 1996, Man Wenjun clinched first prize in the pop category of the CCTV National Young Singers Contest. His old-fashioned, slightly homely appearance didn't appeal to audiences, but his resonant tenor voice impressed them. His winning song, "I Understand You All the Time", offers thanks for the gift of his mother's love and immediately became popular across the nation. Man sang this song at his CCTV Spring Festival Gala debut in 1997.

Following the style of "I Understand You All the Time", Man released his second single "Homesickness" in 1999. The song recalls city dwellers' nostalgia for their hometowns and brought the singer even greater success. He then joined the Sony Music label and the agency boosted Man's career. He has appeared in many TV galas over the years, and gave a solo performance at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala in 2001 and 2005.
