Mitsubishi began to compete in the Dakar Rally in 1983, and they won a total of 12 times, including seven consecutive victories between 2001 and 2007. Mitsubishi said in a statement it would withdraw from all Cross Country Rallying, blaming "the sudden deterioration of the global economy". With Wednesday's announcement, Mitsubishi Motors became the latest Japanese automaker to scale back their motorsport activities following Honda's shock exit from Formula One in December. Motorcycling has also been hit, with Kawasaki pulling out of the MotoGP championship.
