Singapore tourism receipts set record in 2008

SINGAPORE, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Singapore posted a record of 14.8 billion Singapore dollars (about 9.8 billion U.S. dollars) in tourism receipts in 2008, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said on Tuesday.

The STB said the figure was 4.8 percent higher than that of 2007. However, tourist arrivals dropped to 10.1 million visitors in 2008, down 1.6 percent as compared to 2007.

The decline in visitor arrivals to Singapore reflects the impact of the global economic slowdown on consumer sentiments and discretionary spending, the STB said in a statement.

Indonesia, China, Australia, India and Malaysia were Singapore's top five visitor-generating markets, which accounted for about half of total visitor arrivals in 2008.

The hotel sector was estimated to achieve 2.1 billion Singapore dollars (about 1.4 billion U.S. dollars) in room revenue in 2008, posting a growth of 12.1 percent over 2007. Average occupancy rate was estimated to reach 81 percent, which was 6.0 percentage points lower as compared to 2007.
