The top seed won the South Africa Tennis Open after beating fellow Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in Johannesburg.
The first set went with serve until Chardy dropped his in the tenth game, and gave Tsonga the lead, 6-4.
In the second set, Tsonga served at deuce in the opening game and played a winning forehand to hold for 1-love.
But Chardy never gave up during the rally. On Tsonga's serve at 2-all, the 22-year-old once again produced an angled drop shot to win the point.
Tsonga wasted a match point at 5-4, allowing Chardy to square the set. But as it moved into a tie-break, Chardy failed to convert any of his eight break points and Tsonga powered on to seal the win in the tie breaker, 7-5.
