New Zealand elects John Key as Prime Minister

New Zealand has elected its first conservative government in almost a decade. John Key who heads up the the main opposition National Party will replace Helen Clark as the country's next prime minister.

The 47-year-old John Key won a decisive victory against the Labour party in the elections on Saturday.



With more than 99 percent of the vote counted, the Nationals and their allies will hold at least 65 parliamentary seats.



The incoming Prime Minister says the result shows people have called for change.



John Key said, "Ladies and gentlemen, today New Zealand has spoken. In their hundreds of thousands across the country, they have voted for change. And I can tell you there will be a new National-led government in New Zealand."
