The Chinese General Consulate in Los Angeles says all 15 tourists aboard the bus were Chinese nationals. They came as part of a 20-member tour group from Shanghai. 5 people chose not to participate in a one-day side tour to the Grand Canyon, escaping the tragedy.
Most of the surviving victims were sent by helicopter to University Medical Center in Las Vegas soon after the accident occurred. Hospital authorities say two survivors are still in critical condition.
"The passengers from the bus crash arrived here by helicopters. They came in very fast. We were receiving one helicopter every 10 or 15 minutes. Our trauma center had organized 20 surgeons and 10 nurses to care for them, one died after arriving. Many of the patients were hurt in a critical way. Many went to the intensive care unit. Many need surgery. We only have one patient who's well enough to be discharged."
