Williams wins fourth Australian Open title

Serena Williams claimed victory in the women's final of the Australian Open in Melbourne on Saturday. She took an emphatic 6-0, 6-3 win over third seed Dinara Safina. Williams, who also took the women's doubles title with sister Venus, overwhelmed her Russian opponent before claiming her tenth Grand Slam.

Safina double faulted four times, including on break point, in the first game. Williams quickly raced to a 3-0 lead in the opening set, on her way to a dominating, one-sided championship win. The American broke Safina three times and won 18 of the last 20 points in the first set. Williams took the set 6-0 in little over twenty minutes. Safina managed to break Williams in the first game of the second set. But it only served to delay the eventual outcome. Williams served an ace to lead 4-1, and went on to take an emphatic 6-3 second set win. The victory puts Williams back on the spot as world number one. It was her fourth Australian Open title and continued her trend of capturing the title in odd-numbered years, after previously claiming it in 2003, 2005 and 2007.

Serena Williams, Women's Australian Open Champion, said,"I have to thank Venus for hitting with me this morning and winning the doubles, thanks. And Sasha and I never thank Jill and Susanne and my whole box over there...Michelle...thank you everyone for being there this week. I am so excited and thank you to you guys - the crowd - oh my goodness."
