Two-time champions China Wednesday ended with a goalless draw
against Sweden on the opening day of the Algarve Cup.
The windy and rainy weather made it a difficult match for both the Group A teams. Chinese striker Xu Yuan twice charged into the box in the second half but Swedish defenders twice denied her chances of scoring.
Chinese coach Shang Ruihua, however, was satisfied with the result.
"After the Olympics, we brought new players into the team and it will take time for them to adapt," he said. "Hopefully they can have better form in the next match."
China next take on two-time world champions Germany, who went to the top of Group A by beating Finland 2-0 on goals from Naid Berringer and Kerstin Garefrekes.
In Group B, the United States beat Denmark 2-0 while Iceland upset four-time Algarve champion Norway 3-1.
In Group C, featuring teams not competing for the title, Austria beat Wales 2-1. Portugal was due to play Poland later Wednesday.
The 12-team women's soccer event will see the final on March 11.
