The Seventh Session of the Standing Committee of the Eleventh National People's Congress came to a close on Saturday morning. Lawmakers approved the Food Safety Law, as well as the agenda of the 11th NPC's second plenary session.

After four readings in the last three years, the Food Safety Law was approved by Chinese lawmakers. The law will provide a legal basis for the government to ensure food safety, "from the production line to the dining table."

The law will set in motion the establishment of a monitoring and supervision system, a set of national standards on food safety and a recall system. It will also implement severe punishment for offenders.

The NPC Standing Committee gave its green light to the amendments to the Criminal Law and the Insurance Law during a bimonthly session, ending on Saturday morning.

The lawmakers also approved the agenda of the Second Plenary Session of the Eleventh National People's Congress which will open on Thursday.
