The Mainland and Taiwan are looking for greater cooperation in the tourism industry. The two sides met in Taipei for discussions on Thursday, and promised to work together to overcome the financial crisis.
The head of the Mainland delegation, Shao Qiwei, brought along more than 450 travel agents and tourism officials. They represent 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities.
Shao Qiwei says the number of Mainland tourists to Taiwan reached an average of 800 a day in the past two weeks. The Mainland has also raised the number of tourists in each tour package from five to ten.
Shao Qiwei, Director of Cross-Strait Tourism Communication Ass'n said "We will urge the designated agencies to organize Taiwan tour packages for as early as March, and try to get more than a thousand tourists to the island each day."
Shao Qiwei says the Mainland's tourism department has approved more than ten thousand tourists to make the trip on passenger liners. It's the first batch following last November's sea transport pact.
Shao Qiwei says the Mainland is going for more inclusive packages.
Shao Qiwei, Director of Cross-Strait Tourism Communication Ass'n said "One tour includes several destinations such as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. This is cost-efficient for travellers."
Shao Qiwei says he also welcomes more Taiwan tourists to the Mainland.
