Vonn retains world cup downhill title

American skier Lindsey Vonn retained her women's World Cup downhill title on Saturday, despite finishing in 12th-place. Andrea Fischbacher of Austria won the race to claim the second world cup victory of her career.

Switzerland's Fabienne Suter, who won her first downhill on the same piste Friday, was going for a repeat win at the Bulgarian resort of Bansko. She was third out of the starting gate and set a challenging time. Suter completed the course in one minute, 46.20 seconds. Slovenia's Tina Maze, who was sixth in Friday's downhill, was ahead of Suter at the first timing, and was more than a quarter-of-a-second ahead by the next. She took the lead by 0.13 seconds after crossing the finish line. Victory went to Andrea Fischbacher, who displayed her super-G skills perfectly to give Austria their first victory in a women's downhill event in almost two years. Fischbacher, who was second behind Suter in Friday's first downhill here, claimed the second World Cup victory of her career in one minute, 45.81 seconds. American World Cup leader Lindsey Vonn was still struggling with a thumb injury that she got from crashing out during practice and had to be content with joint 12th place. However, Vonn shouldn't be too upset: She retains her World Cup downhill title and still leads in the overall standings, making her a clear favourite to keep the overall crown.
