China's efforts to produce an indigenously designed and manufactured commercial jetliner are reaching a critical point, as work starts in Shanghai to develop the plane's engines.

Concentrating on jets with more than 150 seats, the company will use domestic technology to create a completely new engine that costs less than imported models.
A new company has been set up to conduct the necessary research and development. It aims to become a major provider of engines as China's air travel industry expands. The company was funded by one of China's state-owned aviation groups, along with local enterprises in Shanghai.
China entered the fiercely competitive global aviation industry in 2006, when it decided to focus on the production of large jets as a key state project.
