Federer one win away from making history

Rodger Federer is now just one win away from matching Pete Sampras' record of 14 Grand Slam titles. The world number two reached the Australian Open final by beating Andy Roddick in straight sets on Thursday.

Seventh seed Roddick was the penultimate player standing between Federer and a record-equaling 14th Grand Slam title. The Swiss maestro was the favourite, and has lost only two of his 17 previous matches with the American. Federer took the first set 6-2. He then conceded a break of serve at the end of the second set as Roddick leveled at 5-5. But Federer was in excellent form and he took the next two games for a two-set lead.

Roddick also held his own for most of the third set. But the three-time former Australian Open champion forced a crucial break of serve in the 12th game to seal the victory, 6-2, 7-5, 7-5.
