In an effort to save an American newborn, the Civil Aviation Administration of China opened a temporary flight route to ferry the sick infant from the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region to Hong Kong earlier this month.
The one-month-old boy named Arestan was born in the US but taken to Yili, Xinjiang, soon after his birth where his parents planned to study the Kazakh language.
Five days later the baby began suffering shortness of breath and was sent to a local hospital. When his condition worsened, he had to be flown to Hong Kong for treatment at the behest of the American insurance firm.
As the kid could not bear the altitude of a normal flight in his condition, CAAC allowed a lower flight route.
Arestan is now in a stable condition after receiving treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital in Hong Kong.
