The former chairwoman of Sanlu, the biggest company involved in the contaminated dairy product scandal, is on trial today in Shijiazhuang, the capital of northern Hebei province.

The Intermediate People's Court opened at 8 a.m. Tian Wenhua, Sanlu's former board chairwoman and general manager and three other executives, stand accused of producing and selling fake or sub-standard products. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
17 people have already gone on trial over charges of producing melamine, adding melamine-laced "protein powder" to milk or selling the tainted milk to Sanlu or other dairy companies.
