No.5: Hsiao Jing Teng
21-year-old Hsiao Jingteng made himself famous when he won a talent show in Taiwan. This year, he released his first album called simply Hsiao Jing Teng. It's selling big in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. Hsiao is known for his high-pitched voice and his abundant energy. He's also a composer and wrote two of the songs on his album. At the CCTV-MTV music awards, Hsiao Jing Teng was honoured as the male singer with the greatest potential for the Hong Kong and Taiwan regions.
No.4: Joanna Wang
20-year-old Joanna Wang emerged as a dark horse in the Taiwan pop music scene this year. She released her bilingual album Start From Here. The album has two discs. She sings in Chinese and English. Joanna was raised in the United States where she came into close contact with western pop music. Her music embraces a wide range, including rock, soul, blues, funk and folk. She has been called Taiwan's Norah Jones. Joanna Wang won the award for female singer with the greatest potential in the Hong Kong and Taiwan regions.
No.3: Jolin Tsai
Jolin Tsai entered the entertainment arena in 1997 after winning a local talent contest in Taiwan. Since then, her career has progressed steadily upward. Her popularity accelerated after she set aside her girlish image in favour of that of an alluring mature woman. Jolin won the trophy for best-selling female artist in Taiwan for five consecutive years. At this year's CCTV-MTV music award, Jolin Tsai won the award for Most Popular Female Singer in the Taiwan region.
No.2 Eason Chan
After finishing his middle school and university education in the UK in 1995, Eason Chan entered a singing contest in Hong Kong. He won. He signed with Emperor Entertainment in 2000 and launched himself into the Taiwan market. In 2002, his mandarin album Special Thanks To won him the best male singer trophy at the Taiwan Golden Melody Awards. He's the second Hong Kong singer to win the award after Jackie Chang. Eason won the award for Most Popular Male Singer in the Hong Kong region at the CCTV-MTV awards.
No.1: Xu Wei
After a four-year hiatus,Chinese mainland singer Xu Wei finally released his fifth solo album, Love As Teenagers. Xu Wei has gradually thrown off the frenetic and wild man style of his rock-and-roll era. He's more subdued these days. His latest album is redolent with a feeling of coming-of-age. Xu Wei won the award for Best Album on the Chinese Mainland at the CCTV-MTV awards ceremony.
