Taiwan lifts ban on mainland spouses

With marriages between mainland and Taiwan residents getting more common in recent years, Taiwan authorities have lifted restrictions on mainland spouses of Taiwan residents settling down on the island.

They've abolished a long-term quota on the numbers of immigrating mainland spouses, which was launched in 1992. More cross-Strait marriages saw the quota control rise from100 to the current6,000 each year. That still left a mounting backlog of mainland husbands and wives waiting to be reunited with their loved ones.



The new rule allows mainland spouses to move to Taiwan, after being vetted by the island's authorities.
