Monday night was the last the pandas spent on the mainland. Staff and panda keepers at the breeding base in Ya'an prepared their favorite food and carried out check-ups for the pair before their departure.
Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan spent their last night in a villa inside the breeding base. Bunches of fresh bamboo, crates of carrots and steamed corn buns were packed up in a food storage room. The food, along with the animals, will travel to the island onboard a plane operated by Taiwan-based EVA Airways. A recent check-up showed the two are healthy, both physically and psychologically. Their keeper says these pandas have formed a solid bond after enduring the Wenchuan earthquake together.
A panda keeper said, "I have told the Taiwan panda keepers to take some pictures of Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, and send them to me. I will be very happy if I know they are safe and healthy. I hope they have a good life there in Taiwan."
